One of Home Depot's best-selling shiplap boards is a nickel gap model made from radiata pine. Available for just under $18, depending on your region, these boards are 12 feet long, 5 1/4 inches wide, and 9/16 inches in depth. Covering around 5.28 square feet of space, the material contains finger joints for the boards to fit snug together.

These 8 ft boards can be found at your local hardware store like Home Depotfor roughly $7 each. One side is flat and the other side has a pattern, making them reversible. They can be stained or painted, typically these boards are raw wood and not primed.
Next you need to measure and figure what size of planks will fit your space. I wanted to make sure we had full size planks on our island and that the last board wouldn’t be cut short due to measuring. We figured out what size of planks and how many would fit perfectly on the back of our island, but it would be different depending on your project. Our planks ended up being 5.5” wide and we have a total of 6 planks. We went with the cheaper route and purchased a 4×8 sheet of sanded plywood. The word “shiplap” has become a common household term, made popular by Chip and Joanna Gaines from HGTV’s “Fixer Upper”. "This lumber is amazing! Very easy to work with and amazing prices! Oh – and the customer service is top... The good news is that if you’re interested in getting the look in your home, there are a wide variety of choices and methods to fit any budget. This method is one of the more expensive ones listed, since the boards are primed, but it gave us the look we wanted.
We purchased these boards at a local WindsorONE distributor and used a nickel gap reveal. Lastly, the boards we chose for our powder room project are primed traditional planks. Thanks to Chip and Joanna, “shiplap” has made its way indoors and is now commonly used in homes as a popular choice for interior home design.

Unlike wood paneling, shiplap runs horizontally, not vertically. The material is typically used for outdoor buildings like barns and sheds. No matter where you find it, shiplap was never meant to be exposed, but rather created a layer between the home’s exterior and framing. It was often covered in cheesecloth or muslin and then covered in wallpaper. Once you finish nailing all your planks, it’s time to fill holes.
My lumber dealer says that dried boards in a width of 1×8 or 1×10 will warp when they are painted and then exposed to the warm room climate. So if you’re wondering where to buy shiplap – just give your local lumber yards a call. They are super helpful and you’ll be helping out the little guy. Starting at the bottom, we measured the length for the first plank. Leveling the very first plank is key so that all the other planks are level. You may want a helper to help you hold the level and the plank to ensure it’s perfect before nailing it down.
Find shiplap style wood at The Home Depot, where 8-foot-long boards are sold in 6 packs. Plain pine boards are cheaper than the pre-painted or finished versions, but you can buy them either way. The Home Depot also has instructional videos to help you with installation questions.
Personally, I prefer Home Depot or Lowes because they will cut plywood down into shiplap planks for you at no charge! This is great if you don’t have a table saw or if you want to save time. Just remember to measure ahead of time what size boards you need. We planked the walls with 8″ wide boards and installed black roofing paper behind the boards to give us the dark reveal. You can also order shiplap materials online from popular home improvement locations or from specialty wood retailers with online stores. In some spots, these lumber sellers still exist, and they offer some of the finest shiplap you can find. The professionals working there can even help if you have questions about installation or can point you in the direction of someone to help you do it.
